QUICK FACTS.

Jade Curtiss, taken from sometime after Tales of the Abyss concludes.

Human. Master Fonist. Party DPS. Age 35.

HISTORY.

Jade was a genius of a child, a prodigy of many fonic artes that even most adults couldn’t comprehend. He invented an entirely new fonic arte known as fomicry, which could be used to replicate any object, living or dead, at age nine. Hungry for knowledge, and obsessed with the one fonon he had no power over—the seventh—Jade stuck close to Professor Nebilim, his teacher, hoping she could teach him how to become a seventh fonist. What instead happened is that, in trying to control a the seventh fonon, Jade instead unleashed an arte that set Nebilim’s house on fire, killing her in the process. Too young to understand what was impossible, and never good with understanding mortality anyway, Jade attempts to replicate her using fomicry. It goes poorly.

Undeterred, and spurred on by a Bad Influence named Saphir (later, Dist), Jade spends the next decade or so attempting to perfect fomicry so that he can resurrect Nebilim. But replicating someone does not bring them back from the dead. It simply creates a new person, with no memories. Eventually his best friend and Emperor Of Malkuth Peony knocks some sense into him, and Jade puts his fomicry research behind him, focusing instead on his career, which jettisons him up to the most feared military officer Malkuth has to offer.

I’m not going to cover the entirety of Abyss for you, because JRPGs are long as hell.

But: Jade travels with Fon Master Ion in attempt to bring about peace between Malkuth and the neighboring country Kimlasca, a plan which thrown off track several times, between Van (main antagonist), his lackeys (the Six God Generals), and the fact that Kimlasca isn’t interested in peace at all (because Score nonsense, which is just a fancy word for prophecy bullshit). Jade teams up with Luke and the rest of the party in attempt to bring about world peace and also stop Van from destroying the world etc.

It’s hard to say Jade learns anything specifically, because he spends the most of time being a menace because he’s 35, very confident, and (despite the trauma he is ignoring) completely at ease with his life and lifestyle. He does befriend Luke, though, learn that Luke is a replica, and in some ways face This Is A Result Of His Research, and by the end of the story agrees to pick up the research again so that the replicas who have been created can live better lives.

Also this Jade is Weird Soup Jade because the thought of him having previously interacted with YWKON Jade and Mythra and then confronted with others of the YWKON cast seemed like fun. The most important Weird Soup lore is that 1) Jade spent most of it sticking his nose where he shouldn’t, and 2) Mythra told him to be more honest with his feelings. Will he listen to that advice? It remains to be seen!

Jade meets Namine and Sophie, the latter whom he already knows. He compares notes with Namine about Replicas, and the differences in the technology between their universe.

⇢ Pyra: Explain what's Up

Jade meets the other half of his team, and listens to Pyra explain what's up. It's something, alright.

⇢ Shadow: retrieve your power limiters

Jade arrives late to help Shadow with a problem, namely by replicating his one unbroken limiter so that he has a full set again. He's Jade about it, of course, just to hassle the children.

⇢ burst

Jade casts Indignation and Sora and Namine panic, which is not the reaction he was expecting. Whoops. Better not do that again.
